Goblins
Goblin #18
"Nobbin"

Nobbin has a strong sense of "clawed slug" about him, and that was pretty much the idea - The natural plateau bottom (which looks downright gorgeous, see pic below) forms a natural base for the pipe to slither on.  I also think it has an odd sense of kaiju, too, mainly because the forward claws could also be spines... Who knows?  As with so many of the other Goblins, Nobbin has a natural horn stem handcut in St. Claude.  It may resemble bakelite, but it isn't.  Unfortunately, its fine pale grain proved too fine and pale to show up in the photos decently, causing the stem to look sort of an opaque creme color.  The shot below was my best attempt to capture the proper look, and it still doesn't show the subtlety of the grain lines.

Nobbin is a bit less expensive than some of his Goblin kin due to being more squat and having a shorter bowl chamber - It has more of a "normal" sized bowl rather than the ODA dimensions of so many of the other Goblins.  But what a gnarly bowl it is...  The grain is truly bizarre and twisted, squirming and shifting all across the surface instead of stacking into neat growth rings.  But while the sandblast merits attention on its own, the real amazing grain display on the pipe is its underside, where the natural plateau grain has been sandblasted clean to enhance its depth and "pointiness".  Positively swampy!

The above and below pics give a good idea of Nobbin's overall shape while clearly demonstrating what I knew would be a problem in its photography, namely that the pale horn stem pretty much vanished under bright studio lights.  Nothing like trying to light-meter a fairly dark bowl with a nearly white stem!  I think the pic below gives an especially nice sense of just how warty the sandblasted surface is, though.

Nobbin should be a good pipe for those who like their pipes shorter and more compact, since it doesn't "sprawl" so much as many of the larger Goblins.  Grab it before it gets into the underbrush, or you'll never see it again.....
